"The steady, constant and continuing drumbeat of loss; cities now known as much for their massacres as for their sports teams. A rising tide pushes for something to be done. We, the living, must continue to pressure our political leaders. A stream carves a canyon. Waves tear down cliffs. The tears we have shed for our lost loved ones demand action.
We can save lives and uphold the Second Amendment. We must strengthen background checks to remove loopholes and fund the background check system so that checks are both rapid and accurate. We must enact extreme risk protection orders (“red flag laws”) on both the state and federal levels to ensure that individuals who might be a risk to themselves or their family members (or strangers) do not have access to guns until their period of stress, anger or confusion has passed. We must restrict access to high-capacity magazines to reduce the body counts during all-too-frequent mass shootings, giving time for escape or to “take down” the perpetrator.
None of these actions will significantly inconvenience our friends who are hunters, keep weapons for protection or enjoy shooting at the range or club.
A year has gone by …
And years before that.
The death toll rises.
President Donald Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Pat Toomey, Sen. Bob Casey, Pennsylvania legislative leaders:
Get it done.
If not now, when?"
