On Tuesday January 29, Squirrel Hill Stands Against Gun Violence joined Ceasefire PA for a lobbying trip to Harrisburg. We visited our legislators to talk about legislative priorities this session. These include universal background checks for gun purchases, safe storage laws, extreme risk protection order legislation and a limit on high capacity magazines and ban on semi automatic assault/military style weapons. Public support for these common sense ideas is high and we made sure our legislators knew these issues are important to their constituents. You can help by contacting your own state house representative and state senator and letting them know what you think.
After our legislative visits we participated in a rally where Governor Wolf urged the legislature to move forward on important gun violence reduction legislation. We also heard from some powerful speakers including physicians who regularly treat gunshot victims in Philadelphia, high school students who have lost multiple family members to gun violence, a student from Squirrel Hill, a Pittsburgh trauma surgeon who treated victims of the synagogue shooting and the ex wife of one of the survivors of the synagogue shooting.
